‘Ducking hell’ to be removed from Apple autocorrect
Apple has announced that it will no longer convert one of the most popular swear words to “ducking.”
In the near future, the autocorrect feature, which has long frustrated users, will be able to use AI to determine when you actually meant to use that expletive.
“In those moments where you just want to type a ducking word, well, the keyboard will learn it, too,” said software boss Craig Federighi.
He made the announcement at the Apple developers’ conference in California.
iPhone users frequently lament how autocorrect makes them rewrite their own messages; as a result, the phrase “damn you autocorrect” has evolved into an acronym, a meme, an Instagram account, and even a song.
A transformer model, which learns context by observing relationships in data, like the words in this sentence, using mathematical methods, will be used to change the function.
Transformers, one of the most potent classes of AI models, were first mentioned in a 2017 paper from Google, and autosuggest, or predictive text systems are starting to gain traction.
The iOS 17 operating system updates, which are anticipated to be available as a public beta in July and as a full release in September, will include the autocorrect change.
The new feature should be included in iPadOS 17 as well.
Apple also unveiled the Apple Vision Pro augmented reality headset, which will cost $3,499 (£2,849), at the developers’ conference.
The new headset “seamlessly blends the real world and the virtual world,” according to Tim Cook, CEO of Apple.
It will be accessible in the US early next year and in other nations later in 2024.
A new company record was set on Monday when Apple’s market valuation reached just under $3 trillion.
