Jürgen Klopp decides to leave Liverpool at the end of the season

Jürgen Klopp

Jürgen Klopp has announced his decision to step down as the manager of Liverpool at the end of the current season, revealing that he informed the club’s ownership of his intention to leave when the 2023-24 campaign concludes.

Following the Reds’ recent Wembley final, the 56-year-old will continue overseeing the team’s remaining fixtures for the season before concluding his successful eight-and-a-half-year managerial tenure at Anfield. Under Klopp’s leadership, Liverpool has secured six major trophies.

Assistant managers Pepijn Lijnders and Peter Krawietz, along with elite development coach Vitor Matos, will also depart their roles at the end of the season. Lijnders expresses his desire to pursue a career in management.

In a statement to Liverpoolfc.com, Jürgen Klopp explained the reasons behind his decision and the timing of the announcement, emphasizing the need for clarity to facilitate an orderly transition.

Klopp expressed his deep affection for the club, the city, supporters, team, and staff but highlighted that he is running out of energy, leading him to make this decision.

Klopp, who took over as Liverpool manager on October 8, 2015, has been instrumental in the club’s resurgence, winning the UEFA Champions League, Premier League, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, and UEFA Super Cup during his tenure.

He revealed that he informed the club of his decision back in November, citing a growing realization that he might not be there for the planning of the next season.

Despite challenging times last season, Klopp was determined to help the team and bring them back on track, but the realization of his own future prompted him to think about his decision.

With five months remaining in the current season and Liverpool still involved in multiple competitions, Klopp will postpone any farewell gestures until his final game in charge in May. He urged the team to focus on the ongoing season, dismissing external distractions and emphasizing the strength they’ve shown together as a club.

Klopp remains committed to giving his all until the end of his tenure and hopes to provide more reasons for the fans to smile when reflecting on the season in the future.
