World Food Safety Day is observed every year on June 7 to create awareness about the safety and quality of food.
Therefore celebrating World Food Safety Day holds great significance to draw attention to low-quality food which affects the health and well-being of individuals drastically besides compromising the economic significance.
The theme, Food Standards, Saves Lives is aimed at raising awareness about the importance of prevention, detection, and management of risks through food safety practices.
As part of commemorating the day, the Western Regional Public Relations Officer of the Food and Drugs Authority, FDA, Solomon Kwabena Bonney has urged the public to ensure to handle food safely to avoid food contamination.
He mentioned that the Authority is set to enrol in a policy that will rope in all food vendors to comply with regulations on ensuring food safety.
Food Standards and hygienic practices, he said should be a collective effort by all individuals whether at home or in public places.
Mr Bonney advised buyers to look out for FDA batch numbers, registration numbers, and expiration dates on products.
World Food Safety Day encourages governments, organizations, and individuals to prioritize food safety throughout the food production chain. This includes implementing effective food safety regulations, adopting proper handling and storage practices, ensuring hygienic food preparation, and fostering consumer education on safe food practices.
By enhancing food safety, we can safeguard public health, enhance food security, and promote economic growth. The day serves as a reminder that everyone has a role to play in ensuring safe food for all, from farmers and producers to food handlers and consumers.
