The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Lariba Zuweira Abudu has said the growing numbers of child beggars on major streets of the country could be minimized if the public refrain from giving them alms.
“If you don’t give them today nad I don’t give them tomorrow, next week they will be forced to leave the streets and move away,” Lariba said.
During a media briefing about the Ministry’s various programs, Minister Abudu highlighted that the government has already repatriated around 400 foreign child beggars.
However, it is disheartening to note that many more children have resurfaced on the streets a few months after repatriation.
Briefing the media on the various programs under the Ministry, saying the government has repatriated about 400 of such foreign child beggars only for many more to resurface on the streets few months after.
” We have done a lot to take them from the streets but somehow they find themselves back, we even repatriated 400 of them and engaged the embassies here ut they find ways to come back so we have to we have to stop giving money to minors on the streets because as adults I don’t see why we should be giving monies to six -year-olds on the streets,” She added.
Madam Zureiwa Abudu further made it known that the Ministry is working around the clock to resolve impasse involving school feeding caterers.
She said, the Ghana School Feeding program is one of the major pro-poor programs of government, whilst applauding the caterers for patience and assured them of paying all their arrears and outstanding bills.
She gave a hint of the government paying the arrears due all school feeding caterers next week.
She explained that they are seeking to review the one cedi twenty pesewas fee for the school feeding program.
