The Nigerian police raided an alleged “baby factory” in Rivers state and successfully rescued six pregnant women, based on reports from the local media.
An individual who is believed to be the owner of the alleged child trafficking facility, a 39-year-old woman, was taken into custody by the authorities.
The suspect disclosed her long-standing involvement in the trafficking industry after her arrest, and she acknowledged her involvement in the heinous crime.
The principal suspect and her accomplice are currently in custody, according to state commissioner of police Polycarp Emeka, who made the announcement on Wednesday.
Furthermore, a thorough investigation is being conducted to locate and detain any additional people linked to the criminal network.
In Nigeria, the existence of “baby factories” is a sad reality, where women are kidnapped with the goal of forcing them into pregnancy and selling the offspring.
Similar cases have previously been reported, and this distressing practice has long plagued the nation.
In 2019, the Nigerian police made headlines when they freed 19 pregnant women from homes in Lagos that were referred to as “baby factories.”
Additionally, over 160 children were rescued from two unlicensed orphanages in the city the year before, demonstrating the scale of this illegal activity.
