In India’s capital, a 16-year-old girl was brutally stabbed and beaten to death on Sunday, igniting new outrage over men’s violence against women and the protection of women in the nation.
Security camera footage of the event, which lasted for more than a minute, shows a number of people passing by while the attacker strikes the victim repeatedly.

The unidentified victim’s body was discovered Sunday night in the Rohini locality in northern Delhi’s Shahbad Dairy district, where the event occurred.
Indian police announced on Monday afternoon that they had detained Sahil, a male suspect, in connection with the homicide.
The neighboring state of Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr has detained Sahil, a mechanic, according to Ravi Kumar Singh, the deputy police commissioner for outer Delhi, who spoke to reporters on Monday.
Deependra Pathak, Special Commissioner of Police for Delhi, was quoted as saying that the preliminary investigation suggested a so-called “crime of passion.”
The girl’s father told the reporters that the family has demanded for “stringent punishment for the accused.”
The event is the most recent in a string of murders and rapes that have raised concerns about whether enough is being done to safeguard Indian women and punish assailants.
“A minor girl is brutally murdered openly in Delhi,” Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal wrote on Twitter. “This is very sad and unfortunate. The criminals have become fearless, and there is no fear of the police.”
“The safety of the people of Delhi is of paramount importance,” he added.
The Delhi Commission for Women’s chair, Swati Maliwal, said she had never witnessed something so terrifying.
“Delhi has become extremely unsafe for women and girls,” she added.
Gender violence is a problem that India has long struggled with. The nation was named the most unsafe place in the world for women to live according to a 2018 Thompson Reuters Foundation survey of experts on women’s problems.
There seems to be a rise in the number of crimes against women in India. Data from India’s National Crime Records Bureau shows that crimes against women increased 20% in 2020 compared to 2013, the year before the current government’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took office.
In light of the fact that many instances of violence against women, like rape, are frequently underreported; activists claim that the actual statistics are likely simply the tip of the iceberg.
According to Yogita Bhayana, founder of People against Rapes in India, the issue is largely attributed to outdated societal norms
“We learn to live with this kind of situation in our country which is very unfortunate,” Bhayana said. “The basic patriarchal fabric is totally rotten and right now we need to fix that.”
“Putting cameras and putting marshals is not going to be enough,” she added. “The work has to be done on the mindset of the men and the boys.”
