Gomoa Okyereko accident on Accra-Cape Coast highway: 16 feared dead, more than 40 injured
On the Accra-Cape Coast route in the Central Region, a bloody accident at Gomoa Okyereko is believed to have killed sixteen persons.
Witnesses said that the accident happened after a bus and gasoline truck collided head-on at around 5 am on Tuesday.
The tanker, filled with petrol was traveling from Accra to Takoradi while the bus was traveling from Abidjan to Buduburam.
The Ghana National Fire Service was informed by an eyewitness that the Yutong bus driver occasionally strayed from his lane throughout the journey.
“So he [tanker driver] rather came into the lane of the Yutong because at the time the Yutong driver had also entered his lane,” the Winneba Fire Service Commander DO II Kwesi Hughes told reporters.
The passenger sides of both vehicles experienced significant collision, which resulted in “the tanker driver mashed.”
The commander of the fire department outlined how “other passengers on the passenger side of the Yutong were also dismembered, in fact, they were cut into pieces.”
He explained, “We have been able to rescue the rescuable lives first, which we have done We have sent them to the trauma and specialist hospital.”
The rest have been transported to a local municipal hospital.
As a result, traffic on the road has been stopped while security organizations on the scene work around the clock to get things back to normal.
“We have been able to tow the Yutong bus to a place of safety. And currently, we are receiving the lifeless body of the driver’s mate after which we will tow the tanker to a place of safety as well so that we will be able to open the traffic,” he added.
Over the years, that section of road has been referred to as an accident hotspot.
