Appiatse Residents To Move Into Temporary Accommodation

Appiatse Residents

A Member of the Appiatse Relief Committee and an Assembly Member of the Bepo Electoral Area, Thomas Yaw Enyam has disclosed that as part of measures to prevent future destruction in the rainy season, Appiatse residents at the relief camp at Dumasi are to be accommodated in the edifices of a mining company, Future Global Resources (FGR) at Bogoso.

“As the rains have started, we have planned on accommodating them in the buildings of one of the mining companies in Bogoso. At least 89 of the houses are ready, but we are expecting some roofing sheets from the Deputy Minister for Minister and Lands and Natural Resources in charge of Lands and Forestry, Benito Owusu Bio.

Several houses, trees, and tents were destroyed in the area and have been affected by the windstorm which swept through the camp on April 8, 2022.

The tent houses will not salvage the situation should another downpour happens. This will help to roof the building and provide accommodation till the reconstruction of the town is completed,” he said.

Thomas Enyam in an interview with Spice 91.9FM recounted the destruction of some tents and properties during last Friday’s downpour at the Relief Camp.

“About 80 tents amidst other properties were destroyed in the rains, leaving many displaced,” he stated.

He mentioned that residents who had their tents destroyed got new ones re-erected for them adding that some broken tents were repaired for use but others were beyond repairs.

Thomas Yaw Enyam said the reconstruction of the community could take up to a whole year to complete, and affirmed that houses would be more improved than it was before.

On Monday, April 4, the Chairman of the Support Fund Committee Dr. Joyce Aryee made a declaration in a Press Briefing that, “the amount notwithstanding, is far from reaching what we would call sufficient funds. This is because the extent of damage to the Appiatse Township cannot be overemphasized and this amount raised so far will not be adequate.”

Meanwhile, a statement issued by the deputy minister said, “Funding has already been allocated for this work and it is proceeding earnestly.”
