Elon Musk’s brain chip company, Neuralink, says US approval for human study has been approved
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given the brain chip company run by Elon Musk permission to carry out its first human tests.
The vision and mobility of people can be restored through the use of computers and brains, according to the billionaire’s Neuralink implant company.
It claims that there are no immediate plans to begin recruiting participants.
Prior attempts for the brain chip by Mr. Musk to start testing failed.
According to a March news report citing numerous current and former employees, a prior attempt by Neuralink to obtain FDA approval was turned down on safety grounds.
Neuralink wants to use its microchips to help some disabled people use computers and mobile technology, as well as to treat ailments like paralysis and blindness.
The chips, which have undergone testing on monkeys, are intended to decipher brain signals and transmit data to devices via Bluetooth.
When announcing the news on Thursday, Neuralink referred to it as “an important first step that will one day allow our technology to help many people.”.
According to the statement, the FDA and the Neuralink team collaborated closely to achieve the approval.
The company promised to provide more details regarding its plans to recruit trial participants “soon.”.
According to the company’s website, engineering processes for “safety, accessibility, and reliability” are all given top priority.
Neuralink’s brain implants will need to undergo extensive testing to get past ethical and technical hurdles before they can be made widely available, experts have warned.
Its FDA approval announcement for human testing comes on the heels of recent reports of a related development involving brain implants by Swiss researchers.
