Meta to roll out web version of Threads app

Threads

Meta is releasing a web version of Threads in an effort to revitalize the social media platform.

When it first debuted in July, the X rival, formerly known as Twitter, saw rapid growth.

The limited functionality, however, contributed to users abandoning it just as quickly.

The web version, according to Meta, is a part of a push to deliver new features, but experts warn that more work must be done to rekindle customer interest.

The head of Meta announced it would be “rolling out over the next few days” in a post on the platform, which was accompanied by what he claimed was a photo of him creating Threads for the web.

Users will be able to post a thread, view their feed, and interact in other people’s threads.

Other features of the mobile app, however, will not initially be accessible online.

Users won’t be able to send a thread to Instagram’s direct messenger feature or edit their profile, for example.

In an effort to unify the app’s web and mobile experiences, Meta says it will add more functionality in the coming weeks.

Within a week of its launch, Threads had amassed more than 100 million users, but by the end of July, that number had more than halved.

The tech giant, who also owns WhatsApp and Facebook, is hoping that this announcement will buck the trend.

According to Rebecca McGrath, associate director of media and technology at Mintel, “Meta made the choice to launch Threads in a very basic form “.

“This has frustrated users who checked out the platform following its much-hyped launch, and were expecting it to be a ready-to-go alternative to Twitter,” she added.

“Offering a web version is a very important step. However, it still has a way to go.”
