Ghana Becomes Fifth African Country To Sign SATA Declaration On Data, DigitaI Identity Interoperability

Ghana has signed the Smart Africa Trust Alliance (SATA) declaration on data and digital identity interoperability with four other African nations.

The additional nations are Zimbabwe, Gabon, Guinea, and Tunisia.

On Thursday, April 27, 2023, in Zimbabwe, the five nations signed and approved the declaration during a ministerial breakfast meeting hosted by the Estonia ICT Cluster and SATA.

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, minister of communications and digitalization, who signed the declaration on behalf of the Ghanaian government, expressed optimism that the development will increase public digital services’ adoption and reach, as well as the private sector’s integration and use of national digital platforms.

According to the Minister, the SATA declaration will enhance additional revenues from higher service and platform usage and ensure compliance with requirements from people and companies moving/doing business across borders.

More so, it will reduce government bureaucracy when working or travelling in another country, save time and money, create job and entrepreneurial opportunities, as well as provide safer and better service experience in digital services and commerce.

SATA is a collaborative project that aims to promote trust and secure and responsible digital transformation in Africa by bringing together various stakeholders, including governments, private sector organizations, civil society, and academia to address the opportunities and challenges of digitalization and innovation on the African continent.

Fully in line with the Digital Public Goods (DPG) tenets, SATA further aspires to assist in achieving the five-year goals (2021-26) of the DPG Alliance by creating and putting into use standards, platforms, and other tools that will hasten the creation of an African-wide digital market with “trust” through the use of digital identities and data across national borders.
