Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mark Badu Aboagye has called on the government to open its doors and engage the business communities in broader discussions on the newly introduced taxes.
Mr Aboagye believes that the engagement can bring better resolutions to solve the country’s current economic turmoil.
The new taxes he stated will further collapse businesses, as well as those trying to revive operations following the COVID-19 pandemic.
He recalls that in 2022 when the economy was going through times, the business community was engaged and some of the suggestions were used to stabilise the economy.
“We are still calling, we know that is an opportunity for us to engage because we think that this action if we should enforce it, impacts the economy will be dire, so we have to ensure as a business community that whatever support we can give, the managers of the economy should open up their doors to hear us,” Mr Badu Aboagye stated.
He said the government broadening the tax net to rope in everyone and consider looking at the tax regime and paying critical attention to the informal sector could be another means to generate the needed revenue without introducing new taxes.
Mr Abogye also noted that the country has not been able to ensure efficient and effective tax collection systems which affects revenue mobilisation.
