The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission says a full-scale cleaning of the public sector payroll can save the country about 10 billion cedis annually.
A maiden payroll monitoring exercise conducted by the Commission and the Internal Audit Agency in 2022 in the first quarter of 2023 reveals that 22% of the wage bill of 58 public institutions constituted unearned salaries.
The exercise also identified cases of ghost workers which comprised separated staff and unknown staff who still existed on the payroll of those institutions.
Chief Executive Benjamin Arthur made this known during a Consultative meeting with the Civil Service and Local Governance Service on the nationwide payroll monitoring exercise.
He called on Ghanaians to be concerned about the anomalies in the public sector payrolls and to minimize irregularities to save money to support the economy.
