Nicholas Opoku handed late Black Stars call ahead of Angola game

Nicholas Opoku

The Ghana Football Association has confirmed that Amiens SC centre-back, Nicholas Opoku has been called-up to the men’s senior national team, the Black Stars.

The 25-year-old replaces Alexander Djiku who picked up an injury against Angola at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Ghana’s 1-0 win on March 23, 2023.

This now means Ghana has lost two centre halves in Mohammed Salisu and Alexander Djiku.

The injuries to these defenders meant Ghana only had two central defenders – Daniel Amartey and Joseph Aidoo.

Opoku’s last call-up for the Black Stars was in June 2021 where he played 45 minutes against Morocco, a game Ghana lost due to a Razak Abalora howler but did not feature when Ghana took on Ivory Coast in a 0-0 draw.

The Amiens centre-back has played 13 times for the Black Stars since making his debut in 2017 against the USA and has one goal which came against São Tomé and Príncipe.

Chris Hughton’s side sit top of Group E in the qualification hunt for a place at the 2023 AFCON to be hosted in Ivory Coast next year.

Ghana will play the Angolans at the Estádio 11 de Novembro at 4pm today with the game set to be officiated by Egyptian official Mohamed Maarouf.
