The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) says it finds the reintroduction of road tolls with new charges a good thing.
The General Secretary of GPRTU, Godfred Abulbire speaking to the media noted that the proposed increase is insignificant.
He added that the suspension of the collection of the road toll was to replace the electronic levy (E-levy) to rake in more revenue for the government.
According to the General Secretary as the government could not generate the expected revenue from the measures, the reintroduction of the road toll and the proposed fees will not have any impact on the operations of its members.
Mr Abulbire said, “Operations may not have anything to resist but the review which was one of the key that we were all agitating was that they were going to increase the toll fee to about 400 or 500 per cent.
In the general view, we will not have anything to object to the reintroduction of the toll levy”.
Mr Abulbire says the leadership of the Union awaits the Roads Minister for further discussion on the new road toll fees.
Government in the 2023 budget statement and Economic Policy hinted at re-introducing the road tolls
The Ministry of Finance in a letter proposed an 88 percent increase in road tolls to the Ministry of Roads and Highways for the re-introduction of the tolls amendment.
