Energy Commission To Enforce New Energy Efficiency Regulations

The Energy Commission has said, it is committed to ensuring that Ghana does not continue to be a dumping ground for substandard electrical appliances.

The Director of Renewable Energy and Energy efficiency at the Commission, Kofi Agyarko said this at a stakeholder’s engagement on the new energy efficiency in Accra.

This move is to enforce the new energy efficiency regulations 2022 to the full when the grace period elapses in November this year.

With the new set of rules, appliances that do not meet the minimum energy performance standards will not be allowed into the country.

According to him, Energy Commission is mandated to regulate electrical appliances in the country and ensure that standards are observed.

The Commission’s regulations used to cover only three appliances but the new regulations cover 20 gadgets.

He said the state cannot continue to spend resources producing power for it to be used inefficiently as a result of obsolete appliances.

“Day-in and Day-out technologies are becoming obsolete that is yesterday’s technology is obsolete today, and in the advanced world, they have all passed stringent environmental laws.

Ghana is investing resources in an attempt to insulate our jurisdiction from dumping.”

The new regulations cover gadgets such as microwaves, air conditioners, water heaters, solar panels, refrigerators, and amongst others.
