THE 95th OSCARS: BIGGEST WINNERS, LOSERS AND SNUBS THAT BROKE OUR HEART
The 95th Oscars was hosted on the 12th of March, 2023 by Jimmy Kimmel at the Dolby Theatre. The night started with a Jimmy Kimmel monologue which he used as an avenue to take shots at Will Smith by saying, ‘if anyone becomes violent tonight, he will be rewarded with an Oscar and 19 minutes to deliver a speech’.
This was in reference to last years infamous incident where Will Smith slapped Chris Rock after he made a joke about Jada Smith’s health condition.
Everything everywhere all at once won 7 out of the 11 awards they were nominated for with Daniel Kwan winning best director, Ke Huy Quan winning best supporting actor, Jamie Lee Curtis winning best supporting actress much to chagrin of Angela Bassett and Stephanie Hsu.
Michelle Yeoh won best actress making her the second woman of color to win after Halle Berry in 2002. Brendan Fraser won best actor for the whale where he seemed to be overwhelmed by the award and thanking everyone for a chance to be back in the acting industry.
Black Panther won only one award for best costume making Ruth E Carter the first and only black woman to win two Oscars.
Due to Angela Bassett losing out on the best supporting actress, Jonathan Major and Michael B Jordan took it upon themselves to remind her how phenomenal she is as an actress.
One of the biggest upsets of the night was Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio winning Best animated feature over Puss in Boots the last wish.
Some of the biggest snubs of the night was Cate Blanchett leaving empty handed after her phenomenal performance in Tar, the movie Elvis which is a biopic about Elvis Presley losing in all major categories they were nominated in, Angela Bassett leaving empty handed after her stellar performance as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther and Top Gun: Maverick failing to win best editing.
The biggest talking points of the nights were Jonathan Majors and Michael B Jordan reaffirming Angela Bassett after her loss and Tems dress which was heavily criticized for obstructing the views of the audience behind and besides her.
All in all, the 95th Oscars will be remembered as the night that Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian woman to win leading actress at the Oscars.
