The government has been called upon to make public the outcome of the meeting with the Chinese government to cancel Ghana’s debt.
Professor John Gatsi made this call in an interview with the media and said Ghanaians cannot be kept in secret in the ongoing discussions.
Government is seeking to acquire a 1.9 billion dollar debt owed to China, forfeited to overcome the current economic crisis.
Professor Gatsi said it is unlikely China will cancel the country’s debt without demanding anything in return.
“Everything about the Debt Exchange Programme should be public debt is secured through Parliamentary approval, and if we have any adjustment to do with the debt and our obligation to our creditors that becomes a new agreement must become part of document known to Parliament, and for that matter the people of Ghana.
We cannot keep the Debt Exchange Program secret, the Finance Minister and President are managing the economy on behalf of the people of Ghana and they take these far-reaching decisions without making it known to the people of Ghana,” He said.
