Kofi Kapito, the CEO of the Consumer Protection Agency, has pleaded with the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to safeguard consumers’ interests.
He accused the PURC of seeking the interest of the utility service providers in a price adjustment.
Mr Kaipto called on the PURC to be up and doing in serving the interest of consumers.
He asserts that his organization won’t give up on seeking an injunction from the court to prevent the adoption of any quarterly upward adjustments.
Mr Kapito further said, in view of the increment in water tariffs, some communities had to undergo water rationing which was implemented by the Ghana Water Company Limited.
He mentioned how some Ghanaians faced challenges with the digital paying platforms of ECG and GWCL.
“Sometimes after we agree to pay the new tariffs we don’t see anything done to help the consumer in terms of uninterrupted of these utilities. Last year, utilities were increased more than four times. but in terms of supply, it doesn’t balance the supply.
Electricity went up by 23 per cent and water by 8 per cent. We have agreed to pay the last quarter’s increase, we also expect the services to improve otherwise the second quarter increase might be something that we will go and seek an injunction in court against them for them to implement it. “
