Government Asked To Come Clear On Russian Oil Vessel In Ghana’s Territory

The Institute for Energy Security (IES) is calling on government to come clear on the 600,000 barrels of Russian crude oil vessel which entered Ghana’s territory.

According to him, the credibility of the National Petroleum is at stake especially when it denied claims that no Russian oil vessel is entering the country.

“It puts a credibility issue on the National Petroleum Authority and its management to make this emphatic statement only for the statement to come out later not to be consistent.

We would want the NPA to come out clear on the position of this particular vessel,” He said.

According to the IES, the government must let Ghanaians know why it failed to block the vessel from entering the country as suggested by the Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA ), Dr. Mustapha Hamid.

Research and Policy Analyst at IES, Adam Yakubu says, the IES has identified a firm known as Platon Ghana Limited, a Ghanaian Processing Company which seems to be the importer of the said oil.

“We went into the information and try to understand who could be behind the vessel, only to be told there’s this Ghanaian processing Company is seem to be the importer of the vessel, which is Platon Ghana Oil Limited, a processing and distribution company specialising in diesel and petroleum products.

So this company is the alleged importer of the vessel, and this particular company, why the IES is worried is because the Company over the last year which is from January to December proceeded about 2,869 metric tonnes which is about 3- 4 percent of the total cargo that has been imported. ” Yakubu Adams added.

He mentioned that their check reveals that the Company would need up to about 6 months period to be able to process this content or quantity of cargo that has been received.
