Despite having a “credible” case that she was trafficked; Shamima Begum lost her appeal against the decision to strip her of her British citizenship.
She received a full dismissal of her appeal from Mr. Justice Jay, a judge of the High Court of Justice of the Courts of England and Wales, who spoke to the semi-secret court handling her case.
The 23-year-old is now stuck in a camp in northern Syria and is no longer allowed to travel back to the UK as a result of the ruling.
Her legal team said the case was “nowhere near over” and the decision will be challenged.
Ms Begum was 15 years old when she wanna travelled to join the self-styled Islamic State group in 2015.
She later got married to a fighter from the group and had three children, all of whom have died.
She was detained as an IS supporter in a camp in 2019 after the then-home secretary Sajid Javid stripped her of her British citizenship, preventing her from returning home.
The Special Immigration Appeals Commission has ruled that decision, made after ministers received national security advice about Ms Begum’s threat to the UK, had been legal, despite the fact that her attorneys had made a compelling case that she was a victim.
