Current Structure To Collect Property Rates In The Country To Be Modernised – Minister-Designate For Local Government And Rural Development
Minister Designate for Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, Osei Bonsu Amoah says the current structure to collect property rates, especially in rural areas is outdated and needs to be modernised
Speaking before the appointment committee of Parliament, Mr. Amish says, when given the nod he will work with the Ghana Revenue Authority to change the frontiers of property rate collection where property owners will use digitised and simple ways to pay.
OB Amoah stated that the system would help to name and shame those who evade the payment of property rates.
” It’s now a government policy that GRA should assist the Assemblies to be able to collect property rate, and a certain sharing ratio are agreed upon.
This whole arrangement with GRA is to bring in a certain reform and dynamism which help us reap so much from the property rate. If you speak to some Chief Executives, they say that this is the best way to go.
We need a situation where people would be named and shamed, people will. Be prosecuted.
The system has to be modernised. We should let people know that if you owe the Assembly, there is a step the assembly can go to recover,” He mentioned.
