A Polish man has been sentenced to four months in jail, deportation, and a five-year entry ban to Denmark for assaulting Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

The incident occurred in June in Copenhagen, where the 39-year-old defendant, who remains unnamed, punched Frederiksen on the shoulder.

In court, the man claimed he had been too intoxicated to recall the event, describing it as a result of having a “bad day.”

He admitted to some charges, including fraud and indecent exposure, but pleaded not guilty to the assault on Frederiksen. The court found him guilty of the assault and other offenses.

The prime minister sustained minor injuries to her neck and shoulder but was described as “fine” following the attack.

Frederiksen, who was shaken by the incident, chose to withdraw from the final day of European Parliament election campaigning. She had been campaigning just two days before the elections.

In addition to serving his jail sentence, the defendant will be deported and required to cover the costs of the case.

Frederiksen, who became Denmark’s youngest prime minister in 2019 and leads the Social Democrats, was not called to testify during the trial.
