YaosWatchlist: Netflix’s YOU is back for a fourth round to carve up your Weekend
You on Netflix is a thriller about Joe Goldberg. Joe runs a small bookstore, loves talking about books (naturally) and fancies himself a pretty decent guy. Joe Goldberg is a killer of a boyfriend, and the world doesn’t know it.
You is a sizzling drama that draws you, the viewer into its narrative by my giving you access to Joe’s thoughts, motivations, weaknesses and the darkness that torments him.
You see, Joe desires love, dreams of settling down with the woman that will complete him. Problem is, Joe has a very twisted idea of what love is.
You is an examination of modern love and relationships enabled by the unfettered power of social media and our refusal to live private lives. The show is disturbing and yet so alluring. For all his good intentions and earnest desire to find and give love, Joe Goldberg is a monster who somehow manages to make you actually care for him. You ride over his shoulder, listening in on all his thoughts and dark desires, you watch him descend to self-designed mayhem and yet you pardon him.
You end up feeling it really isn’t his fault that things turn out the way they do. That sick empathy you feel for him is beautifully orchestrated by great writing and the impeccable performance of Penn Badgley as the constantly conflicted Joe.
There are three incredible seasons already out for your viewing pleasure, with the first part of season four out on February 9th.
As fantastical as its premise might be, You is a great cautionary tale of never, well, judging a book by its cover.
Joe’s waiting for you. Don’t keep him waiting
