Egyptian main opposition to boycott election

election

Egypt‘s main liberal opposition political organization has declared that it will not put out a candidate for the presidential election scheduled for next year following the sentencing of one of its leaders to a six-month prison term.

Hisham Kassem reportedly considered running for president, according to the Free Current coalition. He was found guilty of slander and verbally assaulting a police officer.

According to his  supporters, the accusations were politically motivated.

President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi is expected to announce he’s standing for a third term, but has yet to do so. Ahmed al-Tantawi, the lone candidate to have so far made his intentions known, claimed that the security forces had been harassing his team more frequently.
