Former Speaker Proposes Appointment of Chief Justice Be Done By Supreme Court
Former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Aaron Ocquaye has on the 30th Anniversary of the Fourth Republican Constitution suggested the appointment of a Chief Justice should be chosen by Supreme Court Justices at any given time and the person should have a 5-year tenure until retirement from the Supreme Court or a four-year tenure if the person is already 70 year.
Sharing his perspective with the media, he spoke on varied issues including attitudinal change and the constitution, the role of leadership and the citizenry in deepening the democratic process, and women in the eye of the constitution.
He mentioned affirmative action to enhance women’s rights and their participation in politics, local government to make it more responsive to the needs of the people, and stopping the appointment of MPs to ministerial positions are some of the areas in the constitution that needs to be reviewed.
He called on leaders of society to ensure that their lives are worthy of emulation to advance the course of society.
