National Peace Council Intervenes To Resolve Government And Organised Labour Impasse Over 2023 Base Pay
The National Peace Council is taking steps to resolve various disagreements between government and organised labor in the current rising tensions amongst worker unions in the country.
The engagement with the labor union is to get them to reach an agreement with the government on the matter of the base pay for public sector employees on the Single Spine Structure for 2023.
The negotiations stalled following a breakdown in the discussions.
Executive Secretary at the Ashanti Region Secretariat of the Peace Council, Rev. Emmanuel Badu Amoah made it known to the media in an interview.
The intervention by the Peace Council according to the Executive Secretary is under the Council’s mandate to pre-empt solutions as well as amicable management of potential or real conflict that could disturb the general peace, safety, security, and stability of the country.
” We have intervened because we always look at issues that can escalate, so we are still in engagement. In the engagement, it takes some time before the parties involved come together at a table to negotiate. Peace Council is not relented looking at our mandate on the prevention which is one of the approaches adopted,” He said.
Touching on the recently announced government policy on debt exchange program which has since raffled feathers among labour movements and other interested parties, Rev. Badu Amoah gave the assurance that the Council is not losing its guard on that matter and that there’s an urgent need for all parties to appreciate the concerns of each other in the ultimate national interest.
He said,” The Unions and government should come to a consensus because this is not the time to talk about legalities. It’s about what the what is really happening and how the people are feeling.”
