The Ukrainian Prosecutor General has confirmed that a newborn has died as a result of Russian military shelling on a maternity hospital close to Zaporizhzhia.
Russian missiles reportedly struck a building overnight in Vilniansk, a city in the southern Zaporizhzhia region, according to Ukrainian emergency services. This is the most recent attack to target medical facilities since the war started nine months ago
They broadcast footage of paramedics attempting to rescue a man who was caught waist-deep in the debris of what seemed to be the demolished maternity ward.
“As a result of a rocket attack on the territory of the local hospital, the two-storey building of the maternity ward was destroyed,” as was said in a statement.
It claimed that at around 2:00am on Wednesday,November 23,2022, , a missile struck the hospital in Vilniansk.
They added that there was “a woman with a newborn baby as well as a doctor” inside the structure at the time.
Since its invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Russia has targeted Ukrainian hospitals multiple times, including Mariupol, a port city that was subjected to a protracted siege before falling under Moscow’s authority.
Three people were killed in the attack on the Mariupol hospital last March, one of them a child. The strike was denounced by Ukraine and its allies from the West. Moscow proclaimed that it was “staged.”
A residential building and a clinic were shelled on Wednesday, killing two persons there, according to the regional governor of Kharkiv, Oleg Synegubov.
Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, charged that Russia had brought “terror and murder” to his nation.
A key nuclear reactor is located in the Zaporizhzhia region, which has been the target of numerous Russian strikes.
The hospital’s maternity wing was hit by Russian missiles overnight, according to Ukrainian emergency services, in the town of Vilnyansk, which is still under Ukrainian control.
Although Ukraine controls the territory, the entire Zaporizhzhia region has been annexed by Russia as a result of professed referendums held in September.
In remarks following both attacks, President Zelensky accused Russia of attempting to “to achieve with terror and murder what it wasn’t able to achieve for nine months” on the battlefield.
