England 6-2 Iran: Goal galore at Khalifa Intentional Stadium
The three lions begun their quest to clinch their third successive World Cup trophy against Iran today.
Just as all the pre-match predictions favoured them, the match commenced with England dominating play. With a discipline defensive shape of Iran, The Three Lions could not make use of their dominance.
Nine minutes into the game, Iran goalkeeper Alireza collided with his teammate after intercepting a cross from Trippier. However, he couldn’t continue with the game and was substituted.
Few minutes after the substitution, Jude Bellingham gave England the lead from a header to Luke Shaw’s cross.
Saka and Sterling subsequently added their names to the scorers’ sheet. The first half ended with England leading 3 goals to nil.
Second half, like the first, favoured Southgate’s men. Saka 62′ goal completed his brace, whilst dampening Iran’s spirit. Three minutes later, Mehdi Taremi scored to spark a comeback hope for Iranians, but was shut by the first touch goal of Marcus Rashford in the 72nd minute.
King Charles’ men don’t seem to be satisfied with the five goal trailer, Jack Grealish extended it to 6.
Seconds to the end of the match, VAR assisted penalty was awarded to Iran; of which Taremi coveted to end the game 6:2 in favour of England.
England will play their next game against USA on 25th November, 2022.
