Government To Meet 3 Striking Unions Today Over The Appointment of New DG of GES
The Education Committee in Parliament meet over agitations on the education front. The Committee says it is concerned about the growing agitations, especially with the impending strike declaration by TUTAG, CETAG and CENTSAG.
Meanwhile, three teacher Unions namely, the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) have declared a strike over the appointment of Dr Eric Nkansah as the new Director General of the Ghana Education Service.
They declared the industrial action on Friday, November 4.
Speaking to the media, ranking member of the Education Committee, Peter Kwasi Nortsu-Kotoe said, the committee will invite the Education Minister to brief the house.
“There’s a need for us as a committee to urgently do something about it. So we will meet the leadership to have a discussion with them. We will also invite the minister to brief us so that will see the way forward.
CETAG were asked to go back to the classroom whilst government works on their allowances but if nothing was done and now they are on strike, I think there’s a need for us as a committee to sit up and do something on their behalf and that of the students too.
So far Basic schools are on strike, and the University teachers too are on strike, so if those in the Colleges of Education join now, then the system has collapsed and that will not be good for us,” Mr. Nortsu -Kotoe said.
