Executive Director of Africa Education Watch (EduWatch) Kofi Asare says payment of the trainee allowance in Colleges of Education is not sustainable.
This comes after the Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF) asked the Minister of Education to permit trainee teachers to fend for themselves since the government’s GHC 6.50ps is no longer adequate to cover the feeding of the trainees.
Mr. Asare asked the government to consider including Teacher trainees to access student loans to support their educational needs.
Mr Asare believes that government paying allowances to trainee teachers is affecting the numbers recruited to work in classrooms, and this also puts pressure on the government’s budget.
He recalls that in 2014, his outfit reached out to the government to abolish the payments of allowance to trainee teachers but all caution was thrown to the wind.
