Youth Groups In Nzema Calls For Measures To Protect Water Bodies

Residents of Nzema East, Ellembelle and Jomoro District in the Western Region have expressed frustrations about the destruction of lands, forests and pollution of water bodies in their areas. through illegal mining commonly known as Galamsey.

They noted that aside from the environmental destruction, rivers in their land, Ankrobra, Tano Subelle and other water bodies elsewhere which were once sources of drinking water for the people and livestock have been polluted.

They explained in a statement jointly signed by the Executive Secretary, Nzema advocacy for peace and development, Lord Cudjoe an Executive Secretary, Nzema Kueylie Eku, Dr Francis Apoo stated that these water bodies have been poisoned with mercury and cyanide and the ecosystems are under serious threat.

The residents said it is about time stakeholders take measures to stop the wanton and reckless destruction of the environment in the Nzema enclave.

They, therefore, appealed to the President, chiefs, members of Parliament, Security Agencies, EPA, and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to collaborate efforts to stop galamsey in the three districts.
