The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has hinted at closing all shops over the continuous depreciation of the cedi and the increment of taxes.

Members of GUTA have lamented that the situation is affecting their capital for businesses as well as the purchasing power of consumers.

In an interview monitored by Beach Newsroom, the Director of Communications of the Association, Joseph Paddy says, the action is to compel government to find innovative ways to deal with the situation.

He called on government to come to the aid of the Association.

“We’re not doing this to hurt government but to register our displeasure about the state of the economy and the state of our business. Our businesses are collapsing as a result of the inflation, high interest rate and exchange rate.

Government should as a matter of urgency, do something about it. He reveals that cumulatively the tax rate is about 18 .5 percent.,” he said.

Mr Paddy described the actions of government as being insensitive given the plight business are going through coupled with the recent increase in fuel products.

In a related development, the leadership of Traders’ Advocacy Group Ghana (TAGG)is urging its members not heed to the call from GUTA to close their shops.

The General Secretary of TAGG, Kojo Poku says the closure of shops will rather worsen the plight of members.

But in a rebuttal, GUTA says the protest is directed to only its members and not all the trade Associations in the country.
