Chief Of Sefwi Wiawso Bans Galamsey Within Its Enclave
Following President Akuffo Addo’s meeting with the members of the National House of Chiefs in Kumasi Wednesday, October 5, 2022, the Omanhene of Sefwi Wiawso Traditional Council, Katakyie Kwesi Bumangama II has banned illegal mining popularly known as galamsey.
Given that, he’s asked all divisional chiefs to ensure the removal of all moving machines and heavy equipment used in galamsey from illegal mining sites within two weeks.
He has decided to sanction any chief who goes contrary to his orders.
Katakyie Bumangama further warned settlers who have sold their farmlands to galamsey operators to stop forthwith or have their lands seized.
The Omanhene also called on government and security agencies to assist in combating illegal mining activities in the area.
His message was conveyed by the Chief of Paboase Nana Frimpong Manso.
“The practice of galamsey is affecting the country’s lands, river bodies. For this, reason, the chief and his elders of Sefwi Wiawso have decided to ban galamsey activities in the traditional area.
The Chief says, his, subordinates are custodians of all the lands, and anyone who decides to partake in the galamsey activity goes through the chiefs. For that matter, he is charging all chiefs not to allow anybody to indulge in galamsey.
Chanfang machines used on river bodies are polluting river bodies and excavators used in destroying farmlands should henceforth be stopped in such activities.
They are given two weeks ultimatum to remove all galamsey equipment from the sites, and if any chief flouts these instructions by Omanhene Bumangama, he will be dealt with,” He said.
