Sekondi-Takoradi Metro Health Directorate To Embark On Second Phase of Polio Immunization

The Sekondi-Takoradi Metro Health Directorate under the Ghana Health Service (GHS) is set to embark on the second phase of the National Immunization Day (NID) campaign from tomorrow, October 6 to Sunday, October 9, 2022, within the Metropolis.

Giving an update on the first phase, the Metro Director of Health, Dr Kofi Sutherland says, although the first round of immunization was successful, more needs to be done.

At a media briefing in Sekondi, he explained that under the new population target 52, 463 children representing 104.6 per cent have been immunized within the STMA.

The refusal of some parents and guardians to allow their children to be immunized based on religious grounds, others preventing health workers from entering or marking their houses amongst others are some of the challenges.

He, however, noted that any parents who deny their child immunization would be made to face sanctions under the Public Health law after sensitization.

Dr Kofi Sutherland stated that taking the polio vaccine reduces the complications associated with it, where a child may be exposed to any form of paralysis as well as reducing the spread of the virus from one community to another.
