Rice farmers are resolved to increase rice production to meet high demands during Christmas.
Managers say access to fertilizer and cost of production are challenges hampering the efforts of the farmers.
Currently, rice output grew at about 10 per cent per year between 2018 to 2019 with a sharp increase of 25 per cent in 2019.
However, domestic production of rice continues to fall in shortage while import remains about 50 percent.
Records from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture shows that between 2017 to 2020, Ghana spent an estimated 6.874 Billion Ghana Cedis on the importation of rice.
In 2020, Ghana imported 391 Million Dollars worth of rice becoming the 20th largest importer of rice in the world.
Manager for the Dawenya Irrigation Scheme, Timothy Nuwordu said the local irrigation scheme has a huge potential to produce to meet domestic demand and needs some more investment into machinery.
