Ghana Library Authority Calls For Support As Patronage Increases

The Regional Head of the Ghana Library Authority, Philip Yaw Asamoah is appealing to the public especially, corporate institutions to aid them to be enabled to render more and improve services to patrons.

Mr Asamoah, in an interview with the media, says the services offered by libraries are still relevant, adding that his outfit has improved and advanced its services to meet the needs of patrons.

The Western Region has seven (7) libraries under the Authority with Sekondi being its Head Office and the biggest.

According to him, there is pressure on the existing facilities as patronage has increased.

He, however, touched on the relevance of the library authority in the face of advancement in technology.

“People do patronise the public libraries. As of August 2022, we have a record of 22,419 people visiting our seven (7) branches. As compared to the same period last year, the numbers were 1,622.

With the membership, we have 738 compared to the same period last year, when 388 members were recorded. The number keeps increasing.

With all the services we render, we appeal for partnership programs and their aid. Even though the Assembly helps us, it is not enough,” He mentioned.

Mr Asamoah further notes that the library renders community and civil engagement services such as public education and digital inclusion which are aimed at equipping the public with ICT training.

“We now have the Ghana Library App which can be downloaded and accessed to all public libraries across the country. There are educational vidoes etc to aid in research,” Mr Asamoah said.
