New Water Prices And Its Effect On The Value Chain

New prices take effect after the National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers (NASPAWAP) announced new prices for bottled and sachet water.

The reviewed prices, according to the group, followed the increase in electricity and water tariffs and the rising cost of inputs such as fuel and packaging materials, which are mainly imported and produced from petroleum sources.

The new prices took effect from Monday September 19.

It is recommended that ice bottled water 500ml be retailed at GH¢2.00, 750ml or medium size be retailed at GH¢3.00.

Iced sachet water changed from 30 pesewas to 50 pesewas while a bag of sachet water, 500ml by 30pcs, will now sell at GH¢7.00 maximum from the retail trucks.

Mini shops will now retail a bag of sachet water at GH¢9.00 per bag maximum

In an interview with Business daily , some workers in the value chain here in the Metropolis had this to say.

” The price of a bag of sachet water has been increased from Gh3.50ps to Gh7 by truck drivers. We don’t have any option but to sell a sachet of water at 50ps.

A bottle of water is now sold at Gh3 and Gh2 and customers feel reluctant to buy it at the new prices. We don’t have any option but to increase our prices too.”

“The large size bottle of water was sold at Gh16 but now prices of all sizes have been increased. Customers complain when buying and this has made us lose customers”

” As a retailer, I walked under the sun with my basins filled with sachet water, only to sell a bag of water due to the price increase.

Because the patronage is slow, I’ve reduced the price to ¢0.30 instead of ¢0.50 to enable patronage, but that hasn’t changed anything.

I used to sell four bags of water a day but I sold only a bag yesterday. We want the prices to be reduced.”
