The Assembly Member for Asemesudo Electoral Area, Ibrahim Osman has revealed that over 900 commercial sex workers are currently plying their trade at Sekondi, a fishing community in Sekondi – Takoradi.
“About 900 Nigerian sex workers are living and practicing prostitution in Sekondi.”
Speaking in an interview on Spice FM’s Adzekyee Mu Nsem morning show, Ibrahim Osman indicated that the situation is appalling and demands the attention of city authorities.
According to him, these commercial sex workers include young girls between the ages of 11 and 12 years.
He said, ” An amount of Eight Thousand Cedis (GH¢8,000) is placed on these girls before they can graduate.”
The prostitutes, he said, mainly practice the prostitution is kiosks and when they graduate, they rent rooms to continue with the job.
He mentions that the situation remains the same after reporting the issue to the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, Ghana Immigration Service, Department of Social Welfare and DOVVSU.
” The situation is worrying and sad. I have reported to the Assembly, immigration, social welfare and even the Naval Base but nothing has been done,” He said.
Ibrahim Osman is blaming the Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Andrew Agyapa Mercer for not taking any action as the situation increases day after day.
He posits that there is an agency which is responsible for recruiting such girls into illicit practices, as they are made to swear an oath which forbids them from abandoning the job.
He called on authorities to act promptly to prevent the situation from further escalating.
