Use Artisanal Miners To Regulate Mining Activities – Research Scientist
A Research Scientist at the Council for Scientific And Industrial Research (CSIR), Dr Albert Kobina Mensah is advocating for reform in the fight against galamsey.
According to him, it is about time, the strategy adopted by the government is changed to help reduce or eliminate illegal mining.
He believes that the use of the military to clamp down on illegal miners over the years has yielded no results.
Dr Mensah in an interview with Spice 91.9 FM, also called for a national dialogue among small-scale people for whom the practice of such menace is well-known.
“We need to have a national conversation, a holistic one devoid of politics to make sure that the right things are being done,” He said.
Dr Mensah mentioned that community mining cannot be stopped entirely because miners would fight back when they are being forced to put to a halt their source of livelihood.
He further revealed that these miners are somehow connected to the mining activities, adding that sustainability measures be put in place going forward.
He, therefore, suggested that “small-scale miners should be used to police themselves because they can better regulate the activities of their colleagues.
