EKMA To Begin Demolishing Of Unauthorized Buildings On Water Ways

The Municipal Chief Executive of Effia Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly, Kojo Acquah who doubles as the Dean of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) has revealed plans by the Assembly to begin demolishing structures built on waterways.

In an interview on Spice FM, he stated that the Assembly is conducting checks to ascertain permits of various buildings before due action is taken.

According to him, perennial flooding is one number one challenge the Assembly faces and it is prudent to clamp down on illegal buildings constructed to reduce congestion.

” Some houses were built in waterlogged areas which causes floods whenever it rains. We have bye-laws in this country and so we can’t demolish buildings without any proper measures. We’ve decided to organise a press conference with these house owners to get the full report of every building before we can conclude that this building does not have a permit.

If found guilty, the assembly now has every right to demolish the building. However, land owners with permits would be engaged by the assembly to find a way out. Some buildings were also constructed before EKMA was formed,”

Touching on the construction of roads in the Assembly, he mentions the Number 9 Road is due for construction and pleaded with residents of Whindo to have patience with the constructor in charge of constructing the road.

He adds that the consultant supervising the Whindo road project wants to ensure proper work is done for the benefit of the people, therefore the delay in the construction.

“That road network contract was awarded by Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) and consulted by the Regional Urban roads engineer.

I have been informed by engineer that, the road is a sole row line area so they’ve advised the contractor to fill the area before. We aim to construct a long-standing road network.

We plead with residents of Whindo to have patience with us, we know the project has taken more time than expected, however, EKMA is working with the contractor to finish the project on time,”
