Traders at Whindo, a suburb of Effia Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly want city authorities to expedite action on reforming the new constructed market.
According to them, some of their colleagues are still occupying the old market structure leaving stalls in the new market empty. This they said has affected their business as customers are compelled to buy from the new market.
The modern market project, which was built to relieve the traffic congestion caused by vendors at the previous market location, has been abandoned by vendors.
Customers frequently purchase from them, placing the traders at the new market location in a desperate situation because they don’t make any sales at the end of the day.
“We don’t make any sales after relocating to the new market. The market is empty and our loans for our businesses have gone waste. We plead with them to relocate.
Customers do not buy from us because they can get some at the old market. If that’s the case, then what are we doing in the new market? Most of them are selling in their houses too. EKMA should work on driving them to the new market. The market is always empty and we do not make sales at the end of the day,” The traders lamented.
Hon. Alex Acheampong, Assemblyman of the area clarified in a conversation with the Beach Fm Newsroom that the assembly has repeatedly issued warnings to vendors occupying the old market space to move to the new market. However, because they have refused to listen, city officials will have to forcibly fire them.
“We’ve warned them severally to relocate to the new market. We generate income from the market as an assembly. All traders should locate the market to be grouped according to the product they sell. We have persuaded them for a while now and the next time we visit there with the city authorise, we will be compelled to drive them away from the place. Even if we have to carry their tables and chairs we’ll gladly do it,” He mentioned.
