Tax Expert Advocates For Independent Body To Lead Auctions

A Tax Expert, Peter Tekper is calling for an independent body to audit all auctions and processes to ensure transparency.

He said, to ensure fairness persons found guilty of corruption should be made to face the law. This according to him will serve as a deterrent to others.

In an interview with the media, Mr Tekper called on the government not to interfere in the auction processes by appointing officials into those institutions.

“There is so much interference when it comes to the auction of vehicles at the Port. One way of dealing with it is to set the government apart in terms of government interference. W have to separate certain key government appointments and let independent institutions handle that,” He said.

He added that while efforts are being made to fight corruption, there needs to be unit prevention rather than the actions taken by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

He said, even though it is in the right direction, the focus should be on how to prevent it from happening, adding that the institution mandated for auction follow the guidelines given.

“The Special Prosecutor is acting as a legal check on our quest to fight corruption, and so they’ve been given the independence to check gaps and lapses in the system. The OSP’s work is mostly after the work the act has taken place. The energy should be on what can be done to prevent it.

“There are guidelines for this auction and so if the institution mandated follows these guidelines, when any body thins that there is something wrong must resort to the legal way of fighting it,” Mr Tekper added.
