Ghana Cards Are Available But Applicants Are Not Coming For Them – NIA, Reg. Director
Most Ghanaians in the Western Region are yet to receive their Ghana cards after months of mass registration.
The Regional Director of the National Identification Authority (NIA), Ben Sackey Enoch said, the Authority has set up operational district offices in the region which would seek to distribute cards to applicants.
He mentioned that” there are 71,456 cards awaiting collection, as of June 2021. We still have cards readily available but their owners are not coming for them.”
Giving the statistics, he noted that there were 92,899 cards printed during the mass registration in the month of June 2021 where 3,759 were issued to the public in the same month. The permanent offices, he said, had a backlog of 89,140 cards but the numbers have increased to 89,250 as of November 2021.
He also said, from November 2021 to July 2022, there are a total of 61,432 person have enrolled onto the national database after the reopening of the permanent offices.
About 76, 589 cards have so far been issued from November 202 to July 22.
Mr Sackey Enoch added that registration is free for first-time applicants but persons who wish to get their information updated or get a new card are requested to pay a sum of GH30.00.
“The law mandates the Authority to register first-timers for free. The same law enforces us to charge an amount of 30 cedis for the replacement of lost, defaced or damaged cards,” He said.
He opined that to get a replacement for a lost card, a Police extract, serial number and pin number must be obtained after a payment of 30.00 cedis through the short code *771#.
He noted that the Authority plans of beginning a distribution exercise on Monday,8 August 2022 in the region.
