Open Defecation Reduced Due To Construction of Public Toilet – Assembly Member

The Assembly Member of the Nkotompo Electoral Area, Anthony Ephraim has asserted that the construction of a 52- seater toilet facility within the community has curtailed the practice of open defecation.

Nkotompo, a suburb within the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis lies on the coastal belt of Sekondi.

Open defecation remains major environmental sanitation facing all areas of Ghana. There is a clear global commitment toward achieving improved sanitation across the world.

This is captured by the world leaders’ pledge under Sustainable Development Goal 6.

An important indicator of this goal is to “achieve access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all and end open defecation”.

The Assembly Member noted that people no longer go to the shore to engage in open defecation because of the effect on the environment.

He called on the Assembly to foresee the completion of an existing 20-seater toilet facility at Nkwanta in the Nkotompo community to further reduce the open defecation menace.

” The construction of the 52seater toilet has helped to reduce open defecation. Indeed, every costal town experience such a problem. There is however, another toilet facility under construction but the contractor has halted because of lack of funds. I believe when its completed more people can get access to it without going to the shore to attend to nature’s call,” Mr Ephraim said.
