Security Expert Calls For Intensive Public Education On Terrorism
According to a Security Analyst, Richard Kumadoe, terrorism in recent times has become a cross-border crime across the African continent which requires stringent measures to prevent a possible terror attack on the country.
He made this comment on the back of the jailbreak in Nigeria where some inmates believed to be members of Boko Haram have fled from prisons and are currently on the run.
A statement issued by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS)has since directed all regional and sector commanders to institute stringent measures at all points of entry into the country and intensify patrols.
Mr Kumadoe believes that Ghana’s approach to fight terrorism attacks has not been the best and called for the funding of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) to intensify education on terrorism.
He further says the sustenance of the campaign can create more awareness.
” We shouldn’t joke with security issues other than that the element of surprise can set in. It is however important to sustain the see something, say something campaign.
If no attack hasn’t taken place since the roll-out of the campaign, it doesn’t mean terrorists have no interest here. We should continue, to sustain the campaign and ensure our security agencies work more collaboratively with the other ones.
Our security alert is high as compared to other countries. This has helped us as a country as security agencies mobilise themselves to combat any cross-border attack.
The NCCE is underfunded, considering the latest campaign launched, the approach is wrong looking at where the campaign is coming from.
Nothing much is done in terms of public education, there should be a national concerted effort than putting in celebrities who don’t know what to see and say in the face of the threat.” He said.
