Expert Advocates For Creation of New Institution To Address Labour Issues
The past few months have witnessed agitations for wage increases as strikes action by labour unions calling for better conditions of service for employees.
The situation, an expert says is creating some level of discomfort for the government considering the current hardship.
Reacting to the issue, the Head of Research at the Centre for Social Economic Studies, Albert Wortogbui said the approach to labour issues in the country has not been the best and blamed the National Labour Commission (NLC) for its inability to efficiently resolve workers grievances while advocating for a new institution to be established to proactively take care of labour issues.
He called on Labour Commission to be up and doing.
“We can’t continue to run the labour this way, the National Labour is to be blamed squarely for neglecting their duties.
We can’t continue to run the Commission in this way. The Commission is not playing the role that they are supposed to play. Year in, year out you won’t see the Labour Comission forcing the employee to do the right thing. They go to the negotiation table to sign an agreement that has been reached and signed on, they will not hold the employee to its promises. The Labour Commission is not up and doing, they are living up to their mandate at all.
If they can’t do the work they should say so, so that a new institution is established to address labour issues”
