Most Churches Operate Without Land Permits – Head of Physical Planning, EKMA
The Head of the Physical Planning Department at the Effia Kwesimintsim Municipal Assembly (EKMA), James Apau has revealed that religious bodies like churches are the worst in defaulting building protocols.
He beckons that most of the churches are operating without permits thereby flouting the laws regarding land permits.
“Churches are the worst offenders for breaking the laws regarding land permits. Most of these churches do not have land permits yet they are functioning. If you like to go and ask a church to produce their permits, they won’t get one for you,” he said.
James Apau recommended that as part of operating a church, institutions such as the Fire Service, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and others should be engaged to ensure the convenience and safety of residents as well as users of the building.
He mentioned that churches must soundproof their churches in order not to distract dwellers living around the church. According to him, “it is a requirement as part of putting up a church in a residential area.
Mr Apau said, “Churches sited around residential areas should be soundproofed, to curb noise pollution.”.
He hinted at the demolition of buildings in the Municipality due to the recent floods which affect lives and properties.
This move forms part of President Akuffo Addo’s directive to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) across the country to pull down illegal structures on waterways.
