Galamsey Activities Interrupts Water Supply For Operations – GNFS
The Western Regional Commander, Assistant Chief Fire Officer Grade One of the Ghana National Fire Service, Frederick Ohemeng has attributed the Service’s inability to live up to expectations to the inadequate water supply.
He said the activities of illegal mining also known as ‘galamsey’ in the region have interfered with the regular supply of water from the Ghana Water Company (GWCL) as a result of low pressures experienced in their pipelines.
According to him, activities carried out by people who site structures on some fire hydrants are also a cause of low water supply to carry out their duties.
He disclosed this in an interview with Beach FM as part of its Workers Month Series to highlight the functions and challenges of organizations in the region.
“Our major challenge has to do with water for firefighting. Until the recent rains, we weren’t getting water. Activities of galamsayer are something that this nation must watch. It’s not only water for drinking and for household use that we are talking about.
Our main source of water supply is provided by Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) and because the waters are desilted, the GWCL is unable to store enough water to pump for operationalization,” he said.
Commander Ohemeng called on duty bearers to as a matter of urgency tackle the menace.
