Cane Weavers Complain Of Inadequate Supply Of Raw Materials
Some cane weavers in the Western Region are lamenting that they are unable to fulfil orders of their products due to the inadequate supply of raw materials which is the basic need.
Cane weaving, which is a method of weaving chair seats and other furniture with a cane is a popular vocation, which can be traced back to the pre-colonial times.
The skill needed to create beautiful and useful baskets and chairs could take many years to master.
Joseph Benasco, a cane weaver who has been in the business for over a decade, speaking to business daily disclosed that although the business is stable, the price of canes keeps increasing attributing it to the hikes in fuel prices.
Joseph also added that five canes which used to cost GH¢ 200 are now GH¢ 280 while the price of a basket 12square by 12 rounds which use to be sold at GH¢15 now sells at GH¢20.
